Overview

Senior Civil Engineer – Wind

South Africa

At Scatec, you get to work on something that matters. We develop, build, own, and operate renewable energy solutions that accelerate access to reliable and affordable clean energy. As part of a global and agile organisation, you will work with skilled colleagues across functions and geographies, take real ownership, and contribute to a company driven by the vision of improving our future.

At the heart of everything we do is our belief that we bring the energy – the energy for change, connection, and growth. It shapes how we collaborate, innovate, and create impact together.

If you are looking for a role where your contribution is visible, your development matters, and your work supports a more sustainable future, Scatec may be the right place for you.

Ready to make an impact?

Why this role matters

As a Senior Civil Engineer – Wind, you will lead and coordinate the civil engineering work that underpins utility-scale wind projects across development, structuring, execution, and operations. You will guide geotechnical, hydrological, structural, roads, drainage, and foundation-related assessments and designs, ensuring that project risks are identified early and translated into practical, technically robust solutions. You will also support the Engineering Manager and help develop junior and mid-level engineers and draughting resources.

What you’ll be doing

In this role, you will lead civil engineering activities across wind projects and provide technical direction to internal teams, consultants, contractors, and suppliers, including:

  • Lead geological, topographical, hydrological, and geotechnical due diligence and define appropriate site investigation and laboratory testing programmes
  • Assess civil risks during development, including wind turbine foundations, roads and pavements, drainage, buildings, slopes, retaining structures, and site-specific constructability constraints
  • Manage civil quantities and bills of quantities, and contribute technical specifications and civil requirements to project base cases and business cases
  • Support procurement by preparing and evaluating civil RFP documentation, clarifying supplier responses, and completing technical due diligence on turbine foundation and substructure solutions
  • Coordinate and review detailed civil engineering designs, ensuring that risks and requirements identified during development and structuring are incorporated into construction documentation
  • Support project execution through design assurance, quality control, site input, pull-out test supervision, design change reviews, and resolution of civil engineering matters
  • Work across engineering, development, supply chain, construction, operations, contractors, technical advisors, and other stakeholders to deliver safe, compliant, and buildable solutions
  • Manage and mentor civil engineering supervisors and junior engineers, support professional registration, and lead technical knowledge-sharing within the civil team

Your expertise will help turn complex ground conditions and civil design requirements into resilient, cost-effective wind energy infrastructure, supporting successful project delivery and reliable long-term asset performance.

What you’ll gain

  • Professional growth through ownership of complex civil engineering decisions across the full wind project lifecycle
  • International exposure through collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, suppliers, contractors, and advisors across Scatec’s markets
  • Broader commercial understanding through involvement in due diligence, procurement, contracts, cost drivers, and project risk management
  • The opportunity to strengthen your leadership capability by mentoring engineers and shaping civil engineering standards and ways of working
  • Hands-on involvement in utility-scale wind projects from site investigation and development through detailed design, construction, handover, and operations
  • Exposure to a wide range of disciplines, including geotechnical, hydrological, structural, roads, pavement, drainage, foundation, and earthworks engineering

What you’ll bring

Experience and qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Civil Engineering and professional engineering registration, or an equivalent Chartered Engineer registration
  • 8+ years’ civil engineering experience, including at least 3 years’ experience in solar and wind energy
  • Demonstrated design management experience across complex civil infrastructure, including foundations, drainage, roads, pavements, structures, and buildings
  • Strong capability in at least three relevant disciplines, such as geotechnical, hydrological, structural, roads, or pavement engineering
  • Experience with civil design and analysis tools such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, SAP2000, STAAD.Pro, PLAXIS, Rocscience, Prokon, GIS, or equivalent software
  • Fluent written and spoken English and French, a valid driver’s licence, and the ability to travel internationally and work extended hours when projects require it

What it’s like to work at Scatec

At Scatec, we combine purpose with performance. We value responsibility, clarity, and collaboration, and we encourage people to challenge existing ways of working, contribute ideas, and keep developing. You can expect an environment where people work together across disciplines and geographies, where good performance matters, and where you are trusted to take ownership without unnecessary hierarchy.

If you are motivated by solving complex civil engineering challenges and want to see your technical judgement shape the successful delivery of utility-scale wind projects, this could be a strong next step in your career. We are looking for a pragmatic engineering leader who combines deep technical expertise with commercial awareness, strong stakeholder communication, and the confidence to guide teams from early-stage due diligence through construction and operations.

What we offer

At Scatec, you will be part of a company with a clear and ambitious purpose, working on renewable energy solutions that make a lasting difference. You will gain responsibility early, learn from experienced colleagues, and build your capabilities in a business that offers global exposure, strong development opportunities, and meaningful work in the energy transition.

Scatec is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment based on merit, competence, and business needs.
