O&M HV Substation Manager

Main purpose of position

Currently we are looking for an O&M HV Substation Manager in Nagaa Hammadi,  to be part of our global team working together towards our vision – Improving our future. As our Substation Manager you will oversee all activities related to the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of a high-voltage electrical substation. This management role is critical for ensuring uninterrupted power distribution and can involve new construction projects in addition to managing existing infrastructure.

 

Main responsibilities 

Management

This category covers the high-level responsibilities of planning, leading, and overseeing staff and projects to ensure the overall success of the substation's operations.

  1. Maintenance management: Leading and coordinating maintenance activities, including preventative and corrective maintenance.
  2. Team leadership: Supervising, training, and guiding the team of technicians and engineers.
  3. Safety and compliance: Ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols and all relevant industry regulations (e.g., NERC, OSHA, Scatec’s ORHVS).
  4. Project coordination: Working with Plant managers on substation upgrades and the installation of new equipment.
  5. Asset management: Managing asset-related activities, including selecting new equipment, standardizing assets, and tracking their service life.
  6. Planning: Developing maintenance schedules and coordinating with external service providers and contractors.
  7. Troubleshooting and repair management: Leading the response to equipment failures to minimize downtime and restore service.

 

 

Monitoring & Reporting

This category includes the duties associated with overseeing the performance of the substation, collecting data, and creating reports for management and stakeholders.

  1. Operational oversight: Day-to-day monitoring of equipment to detect issues and respond to alarms.
  2. Inspections: Supervising monthly substation inspections and evaluating the results.
  3. Data logging: Recording equipment data and min/max quantities on a regular basis.
  4. Performance reporting: Preparing reports on equipment performance, maintenance activities, and incidents for analysis.
  5. Spill prevention planning: Managing the creation and administration of Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) plans

 

Control and coordinate Plants under his control

This category is focused on the direct operational and tactical control of substation equipment and the coordination of related activities

  1. Issuing control commands: Directly or remotely operating circuit breakers, switches, and other equipment via control systems like Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA).
  2. Switching and isolation: Executing proper switching and isolation procedures for maintenance and repair.
  3. Commissioning: Testing new or modified equipment, such as metering, controls, and protective schemes, before it is put into service.
  4. Emergency response: Taking situation-dependent measures to prevent, contain, and remedy faults, which may include remote or on-site switching operations.
  5. Construction coordination: Acting as a liaison with project managers and contractors during the building or modification of substation facilities.
  6. Inter-utility coordination: Coordinating with other utility personnel to ensure uninterrupted power supply during maintenance or construction

Qualifications and competencies 

Educational Background & Experience

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a closely related field is typically required. A Master's degree or an MBA in an engineering or management discipline may be preferred for senior roles.
  • Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive experience in high-voltage electrical environments (transmission, distribution, generation, or heavy industry), with at least 3–5 years in a supervisory or management capacity.
  • A strong background within the utility sector, including in-depth knowledge of utility-grade construction standards, power system dynamics, and grid operations.

Technical Competencies:

  • Power Systems Expertise: Comprehensive understanding of electrical infrastructure, including HV transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, protective relaying systems, batteries, and control systems.
  • Regulatory Compliance: In-depth knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry standards, including OSHA safety regulations, NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation) standards, and relevant national electrical codes.
  • SCADA and Control Systems: Proficiency in operating and managing Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and various substation control platforms.
  • Technical Interpretation: Ability to proficiently read, interpret, and work with engineering drawings, schematics, protection diagrams, and technical equipment manuals.
  • Testing and Commissioning: Knowledge of substation testing protocols and standards, for commissioning new assets and troubleshooting existing ones.
  • Safety Protocols: Expert-level understanding and practical application of safety procedures, including Lockout-Tagout (LOTO), arc flash safety, and confined space entry protocols.
